When a warning light or lights illuminate on your dashboard, or your engine starts running rough, a diagnostics check can help identify the problem before more serious issues occur.
Most modern vehicles today contain on-board computer known as Electronic Control Module (ECUs) which continually monitors the performance of the vehicle sensors and reports back to the ECU if there are problems.
When an issue is identified the ECU generates an error code. The relevant dashboard warning lights will then be displayed.
There are literally hundreds of potential error codes that can only be read with diagnostic equipment. How much information can be read accurately depends on the quality of the equipment and the expertise of the technician.
